June 1st - Youghal to Kenmare

"You all come back now, you hear," cheered a group of fifty elders, locals and the friendliest people in the world. Last night was emotional, beautiful, and just grand. It really moved me to see so many people drinking and singing and loving their country.

I met an amazing Irish woman who told me all about the Jananese people sitting next to her at her table. Her brother died in Japan and these people were kind enough to bring his ashes over to Ireland. This woman's daughter ordered two drinks. "Here, mom, one for you and one for uncle." The thought moved me and shed some light on the importance of family values in this country.

We left the small town of Youghal at 9:30 a.m. It starting drizzling and eventually pouring down as we left the town. The weather was continuously battling with us all day, but we were blessed withsome real touching and true Kodak moments.

The drive through the towns of Cork, Clonakilty and Skibbereen were breathtaking. Ireland reminds me very much of Puerto Rico. Their countryside is so luscious and spectacular. One thing I have noticed and deeply appreciated about the Irish is their laid-back attitude and their continuous contemplation of the bright green nature around them. It almost seemed to me as though they worship their beatufiul land with quiet personal prayers.

Bantry was q quick stop but a memorable experience. I met two older men who shared their stories about Gaelic and the beautiful landscapes of Ireland. The group had a fun time photographing little kids. The supermarket served as a highlight for many of us too. Today is a "bank holiday"; many places are closed.

Glengariff had some small colorful islands to photograph. But the highlight of the day was the Healy Pass. Never had I felt so in awe as when we stopped to take pictures there. The pass is swervy and dangerous, but the landscape draws you in and tells you a secret it wishes you to keep for a lifetime.

Ireland is everything that I expected and more. I know I will return and I know that I will sit and intake this beauty once more. I think everyone has found a moment of beauty and indescribable pleasure in Ireland. I can't wait to see Skellig Michael. I hope the weather permits us this experience.

Jorge Santiago.
